About the Item

This is an old Japanese Brutalist side table. It is composed of materials that were originally used during the Meiji period (1860s–1900s), and it possesses a truly one-of-a-kind, sculptural presence that fully expresses the raw power of natural materials. The construction is strikingly simple: a slab of reclaimed solid wood is placed directly on top of a tree-stump base, forming a separable two-part structure. It is precisely this uncompromising simplicity that allows the inherent strength of the materials to stand out. Both the tabletop and the base are believed to be made of Japanese horse chestnut (tochi), conveying a vivid sense of the life force nurtured deep within the forest. The tabletop is a magnificent single slab, boldly retaining marks left by hand tools such as an adze or hatchet. The surface texture—born from skilled craftsmanship and a dialogue with nature—embodies the very essence of Brutalist philosophy. Rather than conforming to straight lines, the form follows the natural character of the wood, creating a powerful rhythm and depth within a space. Its tactile, sculptural quality speaks not only to the eye, but also to the sense of touch. The base is particularly rare, made from an unprocessed tree stump with its bark still intact. The uneven surface of the remaining bark, deep cracks formed over many years, and the rugged texture of the wood all carry an overwhelming natural energy. These elements resonate beautifully with the expressive strength of the tabletop. The base has been treated with minimal cleaning only, in respect for the material’s original state. As a result, small wood fragments or traces of soil may be present upon unpacking, which we hope you will appreciate as part of the piece’s authentic history and living character. This table transcends the category of furniture and stands as an art piece in which nature and human hands converge to create a crystallization of “accidental beauty.” Brutalism and the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi intersect here, where rawness and stillness coexist in a remarkably rare work. Simply placing it in a space introduces a quiet tension and deep shadows, allowing it to harmonize effortlessly with contemporary minimalist interiors or gallery environments. A powerful yet serene side table that carries both the energy of the earth and the history of reclaimed wood. Please enjoy the sculptural beauty born from Japanese nature and craftsmanship. Weight: Tabletop: 18 kg Base: approx. 60 kg ___________________________ Our Philosophy Objects always tell the truth. All I can do is just to face with them sincerely and give them deep affection as much as I can. There is no boundary of nationalities and of eras in beauty. But I think now is the time we choose 'Japanese style' and it will be the best way to remind us of what we are losing today and to question us about an essence of beauty again. I hope that you can touch the memories which the objects here have, feel and think of something invisible but exists undoubtedly.
