About the Item

This is an old Japanese primitive-style coffee table. Completely free of excessive ornamentation, its presence is defined solely by material and form. From the moment it is placed in a space, it brings a quiet sense of tension and a confident, grounded presence. Though it functions as furniture, it also stands convincingly as a sculptural object. The piece is believed to date from the Meiji to Taishō period (1860s–1920s), a time when everyday objects in Japan were still deeply connected to nature. Rather than prioritizing efficiency or uniformity, the maker worked in direct dialogue with the inherent character of the wood itself. As a result, the table possesses a warmth and subtle irregularity that can never be achieved through mass production. The table is carved from a single large block of keyaki (Japanese zelkova). Long valued in Japan for its strength and durability, keyaki is also admired for its softly flowing grain, which is especially striking in this piece. The movement of the growth rings visible along the sides resembles geological layers or flowing water—patterns drawn entirely by nature. Clear adze marks remain on the top surface, allowing one to feel the direct engagement between human hands and wood. Rather than a perfectly leveled plane, the surface retains gentle undulations and the rhythm of the blade, creating an expression that is both primitive and powerfully dynamic. Its size is well balanced—not too large, not too small—making it highly versatile. It can be used as a coffee table, side table, flower stand, display platform, or even as a sculptural pedestal. The freedom to adapt it to different spaces and sensibilities is one of its greatest appeals. The condition is excellent, with no signs of insect damage. Despite the great age of the wood, it remains sound and healthy—an especially noteworthy quality. The accumulation of time and the inherent strength of the material quietly embody the spirit of wabi-sabi, where age, imperfection, and harmony with nature are embraced as beauty. The piece will be carefully packed and securely shipped from Japan. Weight: approximately 30 kg
