About the Item

This is an old Japanese primitive-style display stand, dating back to the early Shōwa period (circa 1900s–1940s). It possesses a one-of-a-kind presence, quietly bearing the passage of many decades. The material is majestic zelkova wood (keyaki), whose deeply carved growth rings and flowing grain convey the raw strength and dignity of nature itself. While the form is extremely simple, it is a truly exceptional piece with overwhelming presence. The surface, where smoothness and ruggedness coexist, feels as though a fragment of the earth itself has been shaped into form. The dense, weighty character unique to keyaki wood is fully expressed. Its darkened surface takes on a subtle sheen depending on the angle of light, creating bold shadows and adding a calm, sculptural accent to the surrounding space. This stand is a rare item that serves to elevate and refine whatever is placed upon it. Vases, objects, stones, ceramics, or textiles are all naturally enhanced, brought to a higher level of expression by its quiet strength. Despite its simplicity, it has a powerful individuality, making it especially effective as a centerpiece in gallery spaces, hotel lobbies, or living rooms. Its uses are remarkably versatile. Of course, it functions beautifully as a display stand, but it can also be placed directly on the floor like a low table, standing on its own as an art piece with a commanding presence. This mysterious form—born from the fusion of nature and the marks of human hands—reveals entirely different expressions depending on the viewing angle, offering endless visual interest. This piece deeply embodies the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi. The character of time-worn material, natural form, and visible tool marks and textures quietly speak of the beauty of imperfection. Simply placing it in a space brings depth, stillness, and a sense of quiet contemplation. Weight: 32 kg
