About the Item
This Japanese round low table was crafted in the Taisho Era (1912–1926) from keyaki (Japanese zelkova), a hardwood admired for its strength and beautifully expressive grain. Compact in size, it rests on four turned legs with a quietly balanced presence, making it easy to place in various interior settings.
The tabletop showcases striking keyaki grain with natural depth and movement. Over the decades, the surface has developed a warm patina along with gentle signs of use such as small scratches and dents. A natural split in the top has been reinforced from the underside, a thoughtful repair that reflects how the piece was cared for and preserved. These characteristics contribute to its soft wabi-sabi aesthetic.
Designed for Japan’s traditional floor-seated lifestyle, the table sits intentionally low to the ground. This height was made for use with tatami and zabuton cushions, allowing people to gather closely at a human, intimate scale. In contemporary spaces, it works beautifully as a coffee table, display table for ceramics or books, or a small centerpiece with a quiet presence.
Condition Notes:
- Structure is sound and stable with no wobble or structural issues
- Keyaki (zelkova) tabletop retains clear and expressive grain with a naturally aged surface
- Surface shows age-related wear including minor scratches, dents, and small marks consistent with long-term use
- The top has a natural split in the wood that has been reinforced securely from underneath for stability (visible in photos)
- Reinforced area may appear slightly darker from above as part of the natural aging process
- Past repair is functional and contributes to the table’s long-term preservation
- All four legs are firmly attached and stable during use
Cleaned and disinfected with a non-toxic solution.
As an authentic Taisho-era piece, this table exhibits natural signs of age and use inherent to Japanese antique furniture. Characteristics such as surface wear, wood splits (common in solid keyaki pieces), reinforcement repairs, and subtle marks from long-term use are reflections of authenticity and history, not defects. Please review all photos carefully—condition details are visible in the images—and feel free to contact us with any questions before purchasing.
