About the Item

This is an old Japanese low table, crafted during the Edo period (1800s–1860s). It is a rare piece of furniture that has survived through the centuries to the present day. Made of sugi (Japanese cedar), its undecorated and unembellished form embodies true simplicity. In Japan, such furniture is called a fuzukue (writing desk). A fuzukue is a low table used while sitting on the floor for writing or reading, designed to bring quiet moments into daily life. This piece retains the original character of that tradition and conveys how closely it was once tied to everyday living. The top surface bears countless scratches and small holes, marks of its long journey through harsh environments. Far from being flaws, these traces represent the beautiful patina created by the passage of time, each mark an accidental stroke that gives the table a unique presence. Its survival into the modern age is almost miraculous, and it has transcended its role as mere furniture to become a true work of art. As shown in the accompanying video, part of the structure is missing, which causes slight lateral movement. For this reason, it is not suitable for daily use as a practical piece of furniture. Instead, it is best appreciated as a base for displaying objects or artworks, where its presence will be further accentuated. It will bring depth and tranquility to any space, embodying the Japanese spirit of wabi-sabi. Weight: 2.7 kg ______________________________ Our Philosophy Objects always tell the truth. All I can do is just to face with them sincerely and give them deep affection as much as I can. There is no boundary of nationalities and of eras in beauty. But I think now is the time we choose 'Japanese style' and it will be the best way to remind us of what we are losing today and to question us about an essence of beauty again. I hope that you can touch the memories which the objects here have, feel and think of something invisible but exists undoubtedly.
