About the Item
Late 17th to Early 18th Century Elm and Oak Pad-Foot Country Side Table with Drawer (Circa 1690–1720)
A charming late 17th to early 18th century small country side table, crafted in elm and oak and dating from circa 1690 to 1720. Likely of provincial English origin—possibly from a rural farmhouse in the north of England or the Welsh borders—this appealing piece reflects the quiet simplicity and enduring craftsmanship of the William
Mary to early George I period.
The oblong solid oak plank top, an associated replacement of similar period and character, rests upon a plain elm frieze. The frieze was later adapted to incorporate a single drawer, the drawer front being carefully fashioned from the original frieze timber and fitted with a small brass knob handle, entirely in keeping with the table’s understated country character.
The table stands on turned, slightly tapering legs terminating in offset pad feet, united by traditional pegged construction. The proportions are pleasingly compact, and the timbers throughout display a warm, mellow tone with attractive natural movement. The top sits fractionally to one side of the base, a characteristic quirk often encountered in early vernacular furniture and a reminder of hand craftsmanship and long domestic use.
A particularly characterful early country table, full of individuality and genuine period charm. It presents well, having been carefully cleaned and waxed, while retaining its deep, original surface and colour.

Dimensions (approximate):
Height: 73 cm (28¾")
Width: 66.5 cm (26½")
Depth: 46.5 cm (18¼")
Condition:
Please see the photographs for full details. The table is in good overall condition, commensurate with its age, and remains structurally sound and sturdy, with no loose joints.
There are marks, blemishes, and natural age-related splits to the top consistent with long use. The associated oak top is of comparable period and character, and the later drawer is a sympathetic addition, formed using original frieze material. The table retains a pleasing warm patina and attractive colour, enhanced by a traditional wax finish, and is ready for immediate use.
As with all antique furniture, minor signs of age and wear should be expected, consistent with its history and authenticity.
