About the Item

A rare mid-19th century Swedish wooden table with a single drawer, dating to circa the 1850s. The table has a long, narrow proportion and a restrained, utilitarian form, reflecting its original use as a working or writing table. The construction is straightforward and robust, with square-section legs, a simple apron, and a centrally placed drawer fitted with a turned wooden knob. The surface carries a later black paint layer, now worn through in places to reveal the wood beneath. This layered surface, together with visible wear and signs of age, gives the table a deep, time-built patina and a strong visual presence. Rooted in Swedish vernacular furniture traditions, the table prioritises function, proportion, and durability over decoration. Its quiet, almost austere form reflects a way of building furniture meant to serve decades of everyday use. Well suited as a writing desk, console table, or work surface, this piece brings weight, history, and understated character to both modern and traditional interiors. A one-of-a-kind piece from the mid-1800s, valued for its authenticity and honest wear.
