A stunning pair of Italian game or center tables, each featuring a magnificent pietra dura (hardstone) marble top depicting an intricate chessboard design surrounded by geometric borders in richly colored marbles— including verde antico, sienna, rosso Verona, and nero Portoro. The precision of the inlay work exemplifies the traditional Florentine mastery of stone marquetry.
The tables rest on finely crafted mahogany bases, designed in the Neoclassical Empire Revival style, characterized by their tripod supports with gilt acanthus scrolls and bold sculptural curves. Each base terminates in paw-form feet, a motif derived from ancient Roman and Napoleonic influences that reemerged in early 19th-century French and Italian design.
