About the Item
Contemporary British designer John Astbury wanted to create a side table endowed with a sense of monolithic strength. The result was Tung, a compact piece supported by three curved legs that allude to the architectural presence of ancient pillars.

John Astbury
John Astbury's design studio was founded in 2014 and is based in Stockholm. The British designer studied anthropology and sociology before moving to Sweden to pursue product design at Konstfack – the country’s largest university for arts, crafts and design.
With an emphasis on re-examining the fundamental elements of an archetype, Astbury’s practice explores the principles that drive modern design forward. His work reduces objects to their basic elements, so that material and shape come to the fore. An idiom of simplicity, which simultaneously makes the dialogues and symbols that surround the object visible.
Through meticulous revision and adjustment, Astbury’s work considers balance and proportion from every angle. Driven by a desire to adapt large elements and hone them into more gentle forms, John Astbury’s Tung table exhibits a strong yet soft expression. Highlighted by a gloss finish, the table’s curves catch the light, adding an ephemeral touch to the overall design.
