About the Item

This mid-century Mexican Modern folding side table is an expressive and sculptural example of the brass-and-enamel work by Pepe Mendoza and his Mexico City workshop during the 1950s and 1960s. The base is cast in solid brass and formed in a stylized bamboo motif, a signature aesthetic frequently seen in Mexican Modernist design and in Hollywood Regency-era brass furniture. Each “bamboo” segment is articulated with careful detailing, and the legs intersect in an elegant X-form, producing a light, architectural silhouette that balances organic texture with refined proportion. The brass shows a beautifully aged natural patina, highlighted by areas of turquoise-toned enamel. These subtle turquoise inlays emphasize the sculptural joints and lend the table a distinctly Mexi-Modern character, merging artisanal hand-finishing with modernist geometry. The frame folds flat, one of the practical and charming features of this vintage side table, yet opens sturdily to support the rectangular glass top, which rests on the brass cross structure. The result is a functional yet highly decorative accent piece with the visual presence of a small sculpture. This folding brass and glass table integrates effortlessly into a wide range of interiors, including Hollywood Regency, Palm Springs Modern, Mid-Century Modern, Eclectic, Boho, Maximalist, Contemporary, Coastal, and Tropical Modern environments. Its warm brass tones pair beautifully with lacquer furnishings, rattan and cane pieces, travertine, dark woods, and richly layered textiles. Perfect as a cocktail table, drinks table, sofa-side accent, nightstand alternative, plant stand, or entry vignette, it is both versatile in function and unmistakably collectible. Examples of Mexican brass furniture from this era, particularly pieces by Pepe Mendoza, have become increasingly sought after for their craftsmanship, patination, and distinctive decorative language. This table is a striking example, offering portability, sculptural appeal, and authentic mid-century character. A stylish and useful addition to residential or commercial settings, it adds a touch of vintage luxury and artistic personality to any space.
