About the Item

Documented in the renowned reference book Living in the Amsterdam School, this sculptural oak side table - originally known as a “lamp table” - is a striking example of early 20th-century Dutch design. It was produced by N.V. Hero de Groot, a wood and metalworking firm founded in 1905 in Bodegraven. Initially specializing in technical wooden products for the dairy and chemical industries, the company later collaborated with prominent decorative artists and architects, including C. de Lorm, to produce a series of finely crafted interior furnishings. During the 1920s, Hero de Groot manufactured a number of elegant side tables designed specifically to complement Amsterdam School table lamps by the esteemed lighting manufacturer De Honsel. These lamps, known for their luxurious quality and distinctive style, were so prominent in design circles that they warranted purpose-built furniture to match. One of the first images in this listing shows the design drawing of a similar table in mahogany. The drawing notes that these tables were made in both mahogany and oak. The example offered here is the largest known size (60 cm diameter top), made in oak - a rare and desirable version. The lamp depicted for illustration, is not a ''Honsel' lamp but a ''Winkelman van der Bijl'', also available in one of our other listings. Stylistically, the table is unmistakably Amsterdam School, with flowing organic lines and sculptural detailing that reflect the movement’s emphasis on craftsmanship and artistic expression. The piece is in good condition, showing some age-related wear and a rich, authentic patina. It remains solid, well-crafted, and perfectly stable. Background information Amsterdam School ''The Amsterdam School'' stands for the Dutch architectural movement that flourished between 1910 and 1940. The movement influenced other art forms and furniture designs. Some characteristics of the Amsterdam School include: Expressionist and organic shapes, decorative sculptural elements and a focus on craftsmanship. The Amsterdam School movement is seen as a very important chapter in Dutch architectural history and to this day a very recognizable and beloved style worldwide. ''Amsterdam School'' is a collective name for the exuberant, imaginative and innovative design style from the period 1910-1940 by a diverse group of Dutch architects, interior designers and sculptors. Influential architects and designers include Michel De Klerk, Hildo Krop, Piet Kramer and many others. The Amsterdam School embodies several contradictions. It is an architecture that is instantly recognisable yet difficult to define. It celebrates the communal and the social yet gives almost infinite room for individual expression. It can look hyper-modern yet curiously medieval. And, at its most creative, it can be utterly, infectiously bizarre. Amsterdam School architects designed a lot of exteriors and interiors in Amsterdam, but the style spreaded further all around the Netherlands. The Hague has its own variant, called The Hague School.
