About the Item
An exceptional pair of modernist Art Deco side tables designed by René Herbst and produced by Stablet in France, circa 1935. Herbst, a pioneering figure of early French modernism and a founding member of the Union des Artistes Modernes (UAM), is celebrated for his innovative use of industrial materials and his pursuit of functional, pared‑down forms. These tables embody that spirit with clarity.
Each piece features the distinctive tubular chromed‑steel "snake" base — a sculptural, continuous line of metal that gives the tables both visual lightness and structural strength. The round black Bakelite tops provide a striking contrast, highlighting Herbst's early adoption of modern materials long before they became standard in 20th-century design.
The chrome bases are stamped with the Stablet manufacturer's signature and the appropriate patented hallmarks, confirming provenance and period production. Pieces from this era, especially in pairs, are increasingly rare on the market, making this set a strong example of Herbst's work and a desirable addition for collectors of French modernism.
Measurements: 13.38 in diameter (34 cm) by 23.23 in high (59 cm).
Note:
Herbst, René (1891–1982).
The French architect and designer was one of the pioneers of the modern movement. In 1929, he founded, alongside Robert Mallet-Stevens, Francis Jourdain, and Hélène Henry, the UAM (Union of Modern Artists). The advocate of social concepts, he praised industrial furniture that made art and domestic comfort accessible to all. Called the "man of steel" for his collaboration with the Technical Office for the Use of Steel, he privileged innovative materials and functional forms.
