A stunning octagonal table inlaid with bone from Damascus, Syria c.1900. This table glistens in the light with its surface inlaid with a dazzling array of white bone that reinforces the eight sided shape. Even from a distance this table possesses a definite allure and upon closer inspection justifies the initial impression. The geometric shape of this table is enhanced with two distinctly different patterns of inlay. The entire table is constructed of walnut and has been polished to a beautiful sheen while the contrast provided by the pure white colour of the bone is marvelous. There is a repetitive border section that appears around the perimetre as well as the length of each leg while the areas between the geometric borders on the top are filled with scrolling vines and leaves and stylized blossoms. The craftsmanship exhibited here relates to a type of armour produced in Damascus using techniques of both inlaying and chasing metal known as "damascening" and superb examples are to be seen in the Wallace Collection in London as well as the Metropolitan Museum in New York. The armour is particularly impressive in using steel inlaid with gold for a brilliant reflection. This table is similar in its effect of using light and dark to create a delightful effect. The table also is reminiscent of the patterned carpets woven in Persia that combine both floral and geometric motifs. These tables were constructed to be easily transportable as the top will lift off the eight sided base which will then fold flat for packing. The custom of reclining while drinking tea and dining is well served by this table and now it will be excellent when used as a side table in a modern interior. The quality of both the ingredients and the workmanship remain as potent as when the table first appeared and its exoticness will add a dash of visual interest to any interior while being useful as an extra surface.
