About the Item

A wonderfully decorative and very rare Mid Century Incan-themed embossed leather-topped table in lovely condition. Made in Peru, most likely in the 1960s, this standout decorative piece makes a very handy side table and will add colour, cultural interest and unique aesthetic to any interior. Made of local fruit wood, it features elegant turned legs joined by a lower wooden shelf and has a knockout embossed leather top. The embossed leather has been meticulously hand-tooled to produce the motif of the Incan God Viracocha surrounded by animals and a geometric border. Viracocha is the great creator deity of pre-Inca and Incan mythology in the Andes region of South America. Considered the first divinity par excellence of the Peruvians, he is said to have arisen from the waters and subsequently created heaven and earth and is represented as wearing the sun for a crown, with thunderbolts in his hands and tears descending from his eyes as rain. All in all this is a very lovely and rare side table with a highly decorative appeal and fascinating cultural story. These rare tables are sometimes ascribed as Mexican and Aztec, rather than Peruvian and Incan. We also have a super pair of Mexican leather throne armchairs, which beautifully complement this charming table – please see our other listing for details. CONDITION This is in good-to-very-good condition. Structurally sound, the only flaws are the to-be-expected minor marks to show its age. It has been cleaned and polished and the leather has been treated. Overall it is in lovely condition and if well looked after it should be just as super and even more rare for many generations to come – please see the photos. MEASUREMENTS Height - 75cm, Width - 52.5cm, Depth - 36.5cm, Weight - 5kg.
