About the Item

Thonet Bentwood Side Table with Scrolled Base, Austria, circa 1890–1919 This elegant bentwood side table is a classic example of late 19th- to early 20th-century Central European design, attributed to Gebrüder Thonet and based on original forms developed by Michael Thonet. Often referred to as Thonet No. 1 or a closely related model, this sculptural form represents one of the most iconic silhouettes of the Art Nouveau/Vienna Secession period. The table measures 27 inches in diameter and 30.5 inches high, a versatile scale traditionally used as a café, wine, or occasional table. The round top is supported by a turned central pedestal from which extend four dramatically scrolled legs, each formed from continuous lengths of steam-bent beechwood. The sinuous curves and tight volutes exemplify the flowing “whiplash” lines associated with Art Nouveau / Jugendstil, while also demonstrating the technical mastery that made Thonet furniture revolutionary. The underside reveals traditional Thonet factory construction, including a circular sub-frame and bentwood components secured with period joinery and screws, consistent with examples produced between circa 1890 and 1919. The rich, dark-stained finish enhances the natural grain of the beechwood and displays a warm, honest patina from age and use. Originally designed for Viennese cafés, salons, and refined domestic interiors, tables of this type are prized for their combination of durability, lightness, and sculptural elegance. A timeless and highly decorative piece, equally at home in traditional, Art Nouveau, Vienna Secession, or modern interiors.
