About the Item
This is an old wooden low table made in Japan. It is a one-of-a-kind piece crafted by carving out the root of a hardwood tree—likely zelkova—and preserving as much of its natural form as possible. The powerful presence of the material itself, combined with the organic curves of the root, creates a striking piece that beautifully embodies the artistry of nature. From every angle, the natural undulations of the root reveal different expressions, giving it a sculptural quality akin to natural art.
Furniture made from roots—known as "negi" in Japan—has long been cherished in both China and Japan. The process of carefully unearthing a root, drying it over a long period of time, and shaping and finishing it while preserving its original form is an extremely time-consuming and labor-intensive craft. When human hands respectfully interact with natural forms, a unique beauty emerges that blends practicality with artistry.
The tabletop has been flattened to a usable degree, making it suitable as a side table, sofa table, display stand, bonsai platform, or even as a store fixture. In modern interiors, where clean lines and simple shapes tend to dominate, a piece like this—with its organic root form—adds a striking accent and infuses the space with individuality.
While there are signs of aging, the condition is relatively good. As seen in the photos, there are some repairs and minor losses on the root ends, but none that affect its usability. Items like this have been highly sought after for many years, particularly in China and Japan, and are often traded at high prices internationally. However, to share the charm of this piece with more people, we are offering it at a more accessible price.
The table has a compact form that allows it to fit into various spaces, yet its presence naturally draws the eye. It is an ideal piece for those looking to bring the breath of nature and the beauty of organic form into their interiors.
