Japanese antique large wooden low table / 1868 to 1920 / Wabi-sabi sofa table

About the Item

This is a very special low table that combines an old Japanese large board with a table base made from repurposed traditional Japanese drums. The top panel is made of cedar wood from the Taisho and early Showa periods (early 20th century), and has a deep texture that has naturally developed over the years. The surface is darkened by soot and age, but rest assured that it will not stain when touched by hand. The used wood surface gives a timeless taste and wabi-sabi beauty. The legs of the table are made of Japanese drums made in the Meiji period (late 19th century to early 20th century) in Japan. The year “Meiji” is still inscribed on the inside of the drum, indicating that it is a venerable material. The material used is mainly robust zelkova (zelkova) wood. In addition, this table base was once cut from a taiko drum and reused for other purposes, and it is highly likely that it has been placed outdoors under the eaves of the roof for many years, which has dried it out and given it a rough, powerful look. In addition, the iron studs that were driven into the table when it was made as a drum have been left in place, reminding us of its former appearance and creating a rhythmic design that gives the table's overall design a unique presence. Due to age, the tabletop has a slight warp along its length. To stabilize the tabletop and eliminate wobbling, urethane sheets have been added between the base and the top. Additionally, marker dots ("・" and "・・") have been applied to the underside of the tabletop and drum bases to indicate the correct alignment. When assembling, make sure the markers face outward for the most secure fit. It is rare to find a low table with such character and presence. Whether used as a statement piece in a modern interior or as a display platform for treasured vases, ceramics, or other collections, this table is sure to draw attention and admiration.
