About the Item

This is an old, oversized Japanese low table in a primitive style. It is a one-of-a-kind piece composed of wood materials that were originally used during the Meiji period (1860s–1920s), and it possesses an overwhelming presence—as if the weight of time itself has taken physical form through these inherited materials. The structure is strikingly simple and austere: a tree stump serves as the base, supporting a massive single slab of dark, aged wood placed on top. The table is constructed in separate parts, making it relatively easy to handle and allowing for flexible arrangement depending on the space and intended use. While the exact species of the tabletop wood is unknown, its deep black tone and bold, expressive grain are remarkable. The surface quietly speaks of the long years it has endured, with natural undulations and irregularities formed through weathering—textures that cannot be reproduced by modern processes, and that exist only through the accumulation of time. The stump base is made of tochi (Japanese horse chestnut). Unusually large in scale, it conveys the raw beauty of natural form itself. The coexistence of smooth and rugged textures gives it a sculptural quality, while the contrast between the base and the dark tabletop adds visual depth to the space. The warmth and strength characteristic of Japanese reclaimed wood lend a calm, dignified atmosphere, allowing the piece to harmonize effortlessly with modern interiors. While its commanding presence elevates it beyond the realm of ordinary furniture into something closer to an art object, it is also highly functional. It works beautifully as a sofa table, side table, display platform, or even as a gallery piece—instantly bringing an artistic sensibility to the surrounding space. The wide, flat tabletop provides ample surface for books, vases, and objects, and the solid stump base offers excellent stability. A deep stillness, the overwhelming vitality of natural form, and the rich patina carved by time—all of these elements come together in harmony. This low table is a truly unique piece that seems to embody the spirit of wabi-sabi. Weight: Tabletop: 45 kg Stump base: 27 kg
