About the Item
This is an old Japanese low table in a primitive style. It is composed of materials that were originally used during the Meiji period (1860s–1900s), and it embodies the unadorned simplicity of Japanese woodworking culture together with the inherent strength of natural materials. Its restrained, uncompromising presence feels almost like a sculptural form cut directly from the earth, allowing it to blend quietly into contemporary spaces while still asserting a strong sense of individuality.
The construction is strikingly simple: a slab of reclaimed wood is placed directly on top of a tree-stump base in a minimal, separable structure. By deliberately avoiding complexity, the design allows the true character of the materials to emerge fully. This construction also offers practical advantages, making the table relatively easy to move and adaptable to different living environments.
The tabletop is made of karin (Japanese quince) wood and is truly breathtaking in its expression. Time has softened its surface into a muted, grayish tone, revealing complex undulations where traces of bark once remained. The grain unfolds like an abstract painting shaped by nature itself. None of these features could be artificially created; they are the depth and richness that only long-aged wood can possess. The organically contoured edges further enhance this impression, giving the sense that nature itself has transformed into a functional object.
The stump base is crafted from zelkova (keyaki), a wood prized for its durability and beauty. Its wave-like, sculptural surface conveys a powerful presence, as if it were a piece of natural sculpture. Though substantial and solid, it retains a gentle luster, and the contrast with the tabletop is especially compelling. The base is highly stable, with no noticeable wobble, ensuring reliable everyday use.
While the table possesses an impressive scale and a raw, primitive character, it is also remarkably versatile. It functions beautifully as a low table in front of a sofa, as a central focal piece in a room, or as a display platform in a shop or gallery setting. The coexistence of sculptural presence and practical usability is perhaps this table’s greatest appeal.
Throughout the piece resides the spirit of wabi-sabi, which honors the beauty of natural materials shaped by time. It is a type of furniture whose character deepens with age, bringing a quiet sense of weight and warmth to any space. This is a refined example of Japanese woodworking aesthetics at their most elemental.
