About the Item

This low table was produced in Japan between the 1970s and 1990s. Following the period of rapid economic growth, Japanese lifestyles shifted dramatically from tatami-based living spaces to Western-style rooms. Many furniture manufacturers, influenced by Western furniture, particularly classical British design, began to develop their own domestic production. This piece is believed to be one of those Japanese-made pieces that incorporated Western design from that time. A distinctive feature of this piece is its completely separate top and legs. The top fits within a square frame, allowing it to be used on either side. While the underside features a simple, linear wood grain design, the highlight is the beautiful diamond-shaped inlay pattern on the front. The precise alignment of the wood grain creates a three-dimensional effect radiating from the center, with soft shadows that change depending on the angle of the light. This is an area where the craftsmanship of the inlaid top can be appreciated. The legs feature a linear structure with a simple, streamlined design. A recessed shelf is located in the center of the frame supporting all four sides, making it just the right size for storing magazines or remote controls. This shelf adds a sense of stability and creates a balanced design. The old paint was removed, leaving a matte, natural finish that brings out the natural texture of the wood. The subdued color is not overly glossy, so it doesn't interfere with the ambiance of the space and has a soft presence that blends well with both Japanese and Western styles. The tabletop is coated with a special, penetrating paint that repels normal water droplets, but it is not resistant to highly pigmented liquids or oils, so care should be taken. If you are concerned, you can safely use it by placing a commercially available clear acrylic mat underneath. The overall condition is good, with no structural wobble, and it is suitable for practical use. The inlaid tabletop is particularly beautiful, blending its aged texture with a modern, comfortable feel. With a size that's neither too large nor too small, this table is ideal not only for use as a living room table, but also as an exhibition stand in a gallery or a coffee table in a cafe. Japanese furniture from the 1970s to 1990s is currently experiencing a resurgence in popularity both at home and abroad, garnering popularity for its exquisite balance of Japanese-Western design and solid woodworking techniques. This piece fits within that context, creating a captivating piece that embodies the spirit of the era. Dimensions: W 89.5cm x D 89.7cm x H 44.8cm Weight: Tabletop: 8.15kg Legs: 7.35kg Item No.: TA130
