Rare Biedermeier Globe Table "Globustisch"

About the Item

Walnut, Maple, Pearwood | Carved, Gilt, and Ebonized Detailing with Penwork Featuring a secret drawer, with the original lock and key. This is one of very few Biedermeier globe tables ever created, most of which are now on display in museums or in other collections such as Buckingham Palace. Typically designed as sewing work tables, which were given as gifts to noblewomen, globe tables are a rare and desirable find. These tables are highly customized, sometimes commissioned in pairs, with several interior drawers and alcoves to hold sewing apparatus, all covering a hidden compartment beneath. With the tender political atmosphere of the time, it is thought that these secret spaces may have been used to hide sensitive materials such as personal letters, or perhaps jewelery. The social and political transitions taking place during the period are also reflected in the exterior design of this table, highlighted in the marriage of the Biedermeier simplicity and functionality with the ornate decoration of the Empire period. For example, this beautiful merging of styles is seen in the clean form of the three delicately curved legs, featuring gilt lions' heads and paw feet. LITERATURE. M.
