About the Item
Description:
A pine desk designed by architect Martin Nyrop and made by cabinetmaker Rudolph Rasmussen during the early 20th century. This desk, until recently, was part of the interior of the Copenhagen Town Hall. A building designed by architect Martin Nyrop in the Danish Art Nouveau style ("Skønvirke"), also referred to as the National Romantic style. Nyrop designed the totality of the Town Hall: exterior, accessories,
furnishings. Construction on the building began in 1892 and concluded in 1905, therefore this desk was designed, built and installed before 1905. This makes the design one of the first major collaborations for cabinetmaker Rudolph Rasmussen. From its incised detailing and brass accents, this desk shares many of the restrained decorative accents seen across the furniture made for the Copenhagen Town Hall. In particular, the incised linear details, seen on the legs and the beautifully patinated brass foot bar can be seen in the bookcases and cabinets from the same project. The desk is in good vintage condition with historic wear to the linoleum surface.

Brass Rødby Rådhus Desk by Ebbe
Karen Clemmensen, 1953
By Karen
Ebbe Clemmensen
Located in London, GB
A teak, Oregon pine, and brass desk, designed by Ebbe & Karen Clemmensen, in 1953 for the Rødby Rådhus (Town Hall), Denmark. The desk is in a late Classicist style, characterised by symmetrical design and simple ornamentation. Constructed with a pine kickboard, and a teak top, the legs finish with patinated brass shoes. The top is a slight trapezoid shape tapering at the front, originally to allow for serial desks to be attached resulting in a gentle crescent curve for a meeting room.
A small circular recession, intended to be used to hold ashtrays, has its original petrol blue finish, popular with the two designers, and frequently used in their Copenhagen house constructed in the same year as this project. Today, this can be used to hold a pen pot...
