Antique Painted French Wine Tasting Table, “Grand Vins de Bordeaux”

About the Item

From circa 1900, this wine tasting table is of typical size and has the circular shape of other French tasting tables. However, later in the 20th century, its tilt top was wonderfully painted to depict the colorful crest of the French vineyard, Haut Passeloup. Along the top of the table, the phrase, Grand Vins De Bordeaux (“grand Bordeaux wines”) has been painted in black letters. Towards the bottom of the table, Domaine De Haut Passeloupe can be seen in yellow letters above Margaux painted in black. The Domaine Haut Passeloup is a red wine from Margaux produced by Domaine Haut Passeloup (old French winery estate since 1790) The center of the table showcases the Haut Passeloup logo, which is a pair of ibexes in a passant regardant attitude (a striding animal looking over its shoulder) acting as supporters for a coat of arms. The coat of arms is a circular cartouche that depicts a castle with five spires underneath a starry night. The cartouche is topped by an open mural crown symbolizing a castle wall. Each ibex has an open crown for a collar with broken chains beneath their neck. As with most of the French wine tasting tables, our table has a flip top that folds down. The bell-shaped support swivels into a locking position. The pedestal feet and folding nature of these tables allowed for easy storage and transportation to and from the vineyards. Of course, you can also use this painted tilt top table as a breakfast table or small occasional table. It would look fabulous standing in its tilted position as a decorative accent in a cellar or wine room.

The table height when positioned upright is 43 3/4 inches. Painted decor added later.
