About the Item

Dan Douke Tangee 1985 65 x 70 inches Daniel Douke has become a legend in the Los Angeles art scene of the last several decades for his witty and unbelievably convincing trompe l'oeil paintings. This painting has to be seen in person to be believed. You can't get close enough to discern that it is actually acrylic on canvas over board and not a slab of rusted metal covered in graffiti that was edge-cut with a blow torch. The painting within the painting (the paint marks on the rusty metal, which appear to be graffiti or the markings of construction workers, and the imprint of a tire) establishes a clever dialogue between painterly abstraction and the overall realism of the tromp l'oeil object. The graffiti references street art, a burgeoning school of painting in the 1980s, when this was done, and the rusting industrial character of the work references artist like George Herms and Ed Kienholz, two titans of the Los Angeles post war avant grade, who incorporated the rusty detritus of Americana into their work. All in all a painting that succeeds on multiple levels.
