About the Item

Silkscreen on canvas by Marylin Monroe after Andy Warhol. Marylin is painted red on a blue background. Photograph screen-printed in color on canvas, signed on the back. Signature in black marker on the front. 67 x 50 cm. Numbered Stamp from Andy Warhol's workshop on the back. Hand-drawn slash to separate individual print number from edition size. Beautiful size, very decorative. Photograph of Marilyn Monroe taken during the filming of the film Niagara, 1953, by Gene Kornman. Warhol, like most artists, used different signature styles over the course of his career (Picasso, for example, used as many as thirty-six). In Warhol's case, he also had his assistants sign in the "Factory" (his studio) for him. So, an authentic Warhol signature may not look like another authentic Warhol signature. For him, consumer objects are transformed into works of art and works of art, infinitely reproducible, into consumer objects! “Department stores will become the new museums and museums of department stores,” he writes. The artist also enjoys playing with chance by making multiple overprints to obtain the effects of smudges, superpositions and slight shifts that give his works their charm. But ultimately it doesn’t matter, since according to him “we always do the same thing even if we seem to be doing something else”! Andy Warhol (1928-1987) was an American artist and a leading figure in Pop art. He revolutionized art history by propelling Pop Art to the top thanks to his artistic talent. He is arguably the most important American artist of the 20th century. He not only defined Pop Art, but had an unparalleled influence on artists and image-making. In 1963, he adopted a technique that he would use for his most famous works: photography screen-printed on canvas, a stereotype of pop art. His favorite motifs will be registered brand names, the dollar symbol, or the faces of celebrities, notably Marilyn Monroe. A portrait of Marylin Monroe “Shot sage blue Marylin” by Andy Warhol has become the most expensive 20th century work ever sold at auction. So with Warhol, everything looks the same but nothing is identical. Warhol became friends with a number of prolific young artists who were dominating the New York art market of the 1980s with street art, including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Julian Schnabel and Keith Haring.
