About the Item

A wonderful folio by the Modern Master David Hockney. This folio was assembled in 1993 from a series of photographs the artist made of visitors to his Studio in Los Angeles between 1990-91. The folio is accompanied by an original copy of the transfer note from the Hockney Trust to the original buyer. The folio consists of seven signed and numbered lithographs 4/20 and the signed titled page. Each lithograph has been beautifully framed in an eclectic collection of different but complementary frames. The lithographs are on full sheets of arches paper. The original folio sleeve and original tissue inserts are also included separately. The tissue inserts name each individual were hand written by the artist. I don’t believe there are many complete sets any longer as of the 20 sets plus proofs most were broken up. The title page reads: These photographs were made with a Canon still video camera and printed with a Canon color laser copier 500 on parsons linen ledger paper. Each portrait is a collage of five separate photographs on arches paper. The visitors - were just that. No one dressed up for these pictures. They were simply asked to stand in natural light in front of a painting in my studio. Most of the portraits were made at the same time of day, recording the visitors and work people over a period of a few months in 1990-1991. This portfolio of seven pages is number 4 of an edition on 20. Then signed David Hockney in pencil. The folio case has some water damage to one side. The tissue pages stored inside are ok. The lithographs are in excellent condition. We have not inspected them out of the frames. I assume they have been framed correctly in protective acrylic. The frames themselves have some minor losses.

“Absolut Statehood” a Folio of 51 Lithographs Representating Each State, plus DC
Located in Palm Springs, CA
We were extremely fortunate to come across a magnificent set of 51 lithographs from a series that Absolut sponsored in 1992-3. They are accompanied by a book with commentary by Glenn O’Brien and Photography by Antonio Alia Guccione. The book is signed by Antonio Guccione. Absolut commissioned 51 artists to create a work to represent the state they come from. In addition Washington D.C. is represented as well for a total of 51 lithograph in the group. They are all hand numbered and signed by the artists 62/400. We are, unfortunately missing the original folio box, but we have a shipping crate and they are all separated by acid free paper. The initial photograph is from an ad that Absolut ran in 1993. It is not included in the group. I pulled it off the internet to illustrate all of the images. I can only upload 20 images to this site at a time so I chose a few of my personal favorites. If you would like to see any specific image i will gladly send pictures. . They are all in good condition except for a couple of marks to one or two. Also included is commemorative sheet of stamps. I’ve cut a paste the following from the Swedish Museum of spirits: Absolut Statehood was one of Absolut Vodka’s biggest, most ambitious art projects. From throughout the US, 51 artists, one from each state plus Washington, D.C., were commissioned to create “state portraits” representing their home states. The artworks were published once a fortnight in the national daily newspaper USA Today during 1992 and 1993. In conjunction with the campaign, lithographs of every piece were sold, numbered and signed by the artist. All proceeds, totalling some 4 million dollars, were donated to the Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS (DIFFA) to support medical research. At a time when HIV and AIDS were still a death sentence, the Statehood campaign helped disseminate a more empathic understanding of the illness. And to sell a vodka. Among the artists included are: Charles Becker (California) Karen Blessen (Texas) Judy Byron (Washington D.C.) Susan Chambers (Arkansas) Michael Christie (West Virginia) Jon Coffelt (Alabama) James Willie Faust (Indiana) Mike Hodges (Virginia) Woody Jackson (Vermont) Deborah Justice (Colorado) Gary Kelley (Iowa) Steve LaRance (Montana) Mark McDowell (Arizona) Mike Reed (Minnesota) Gordan Sherman (Kansas) Moishe Smith (Utah) Kevin Smith (Idaho) Ellen Steinfeld (New York) Fred Stonehouse (Wisconsin) Winona Taylor (Rhode Island) Suzanne White (Maine) Sherrie Wolf...
