About the Item
A 1980's 'String Painting' by David Roth (1942-). String Paintings present a horizontal scanned 'image' on a field of vertical strings in resistance to gravity, reacting much in the manner of the standing observer. Creating for the observer the simultaneous physical experience of the 'real' and the visual experience of the 'depicted'.
Constructed of hand painted cotton string tied into bunches and attached at the top to two 3/4"square x 34" wood support. Signed and dated. Rolls up for shipping in a box app. Measures: 12" x 12" x 36". Exhibited originally at The Jamie Szoke Gallery NYC 12/84. Thence to John Szoke Gallery, to Francis Frost. David Roth was represented by The Robert Elkon Gallery from 1971-1983. Roth's works are in the collections of The Brooklyn Museum, Yale University Art Gallery, The Philadelphia Museum, The Albright Knox, The Newark Museum etc.

David Roth
David Roth studied with Aaron Siskind and Harry Callahan at the Chicago Institute of Design in the early 1960s. He was represented by New York City's Robert Elkon Gallery in the 1970s, and his works are in numerous museums, such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum and the Albright-Knox Art Museum, as well as in corporate and private collections.
