Joppa is a contemporary folk artist whose creative work includes the use of piano components and finishes learned from the restoration of pianos, his "day job".
Joppa has shown his work joyfully and has been received by a growing group of collectors and benefactors. Starting slowly, with those for whom he restored an instrument, and gaining exposure at local galleries. The work is subdued and nuanced, taking strings that can no longer serve their intended purpose, and forming kinetic sculptures. The work is historic, as in the subject piece of this listing, with a hand-lacquered portion of a piano lid, fit to a classical gilt frame. Almost mirror-like in finish, the sumptuous undulations in the glossy piece reflect and refract light beautifully.
