About the Item

'Chameleon and Lichen' is a hand-tufted tapestry by contemporary fiber artist Tjitske Storm. The tapestry is digitally designed by Tjitske and handmade by artisans in India with the utmost care. New Zealand Wool of the highest quality is used to create the durable and soft results, and yarns are coloured with natural chemical-free ingredients. Last but not least some sparks are added through implementing messing chains around the borders. The work is part of the series 'The Art of Living Together', inspired by the natural phenomenon of symbiosis* within evolution, which is a fascinating intermingling between different species in their development. The interaction amidst these seemingly opposite forces is emphasized through the correlation of the geometric and the organic, the abstract and the detailed, the digital and the tactile, the East and the West, the North and the South, and the old and the new. When the fragile reciprocity is precisely balanced, these dissimilar worlds smoothly collide, merge and enforce each other. *Symbiosis Lichen is a multi-layered organism consisting of fungi that lives together with algae or bacteria on trees, rocks and stones. Without each other these organismes can’t survive: mutualistic symbiosis. The chameleon perfectly blends in with the lichen due to their similar appearance. Thanks to this, the act of camouflaging is less energy-consuming, while the chameleon stays invisible for its prey and predators. The lichen is not harmed at all and the chameleon benefits from it: commensalistic symbiosis. About the artist "My expressive style reflects a dynamic synergy of opposite worlds, visible through the combination of precisely aligned geometry and fluid organic shapes, detailed photographic assemblages and abstract illustrations, and the implementation of digital techniques and ancient fiber crafts. Through exploring, interchanging and harmonizing contradictions and perspectives, both conceptually and visually, I aim to underline the fragile equilibrium between the unity and the diversity of life."

Contemporary Wool Wall Tapestry with Shades of Green, Opus LXXIII by Mira Sohlen
Located in 1204, CH
Each tapestry is called Opus followed by its chronological roman numeral in the order they were created. Opus is a latin word meaning a work, used to mean a particular piece of music by a composer. Furthermore, when Mira creates her tapestries she never envisions the final outcome; her vision is her process. Throughout the process, similar to the one of a musical composer, she aims to find patterns of beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion. It is as if different shapes are dancing and her aim is to capture just the right moment where Opus becomes a visual and tactile form of music. Mira Sohlén creates tapestries which are made from a unique method of tiling. Each tapestry is made from handmade tufted...
