About the Item

Limited edition silkscreen by Jesus Rafael Soto, (Venezuelan, 1923–2005). Spiral by the artist Rafael Jesús Soto, is a silkscreen print created in a limited edition between 1955 and 1983, captures the artist's exploration of optical movement and perception. The composition features a series of black, curved lines that radiate outward in a spiral pattern against a white background, creating a compelling illusion of depth and motion. As the viewer’s eye follows the concentric curves, the image appears to pulsate and shift, drawing the eye towards the center in a seemingly endless vortex. Soto, a pioneer in kinetic and Op Art, skillfully uses minimal elements to evoke a powerful visual effect that blurs the boundary between two-dimensional and three-dimensional space. This piece exemplifies Soto’s ability to manipulate perception through precise, repetitive patterns, inviting viewers to engage with the dynamic energy of visual illusion. Jesús Rafael Soto With dynamic sculptures and installations composed from synthetic materials, Jesús Rafael Soto helped pioneer Op art and kinetic art. He drew on color theory and the flattened planes of Cubism as he crafted his three-dimensional works from nylon, Perspex, steel, and industrial paint. Thanks to Soto’s keen understanding of geometry and negative space, his works often appear to vibrate or simply shift in space. Soto’s art education took him from his native Venezuela, where he studied in Caracas and directed the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Maracaibo, to Paris, where he associated with experimental artists including Jean Tinguely, Victor Vasarely, Alexander Calder, and Fernand Léger. His work has been shown in New York, London, Paris, São Paulo, Berlin, Caracas, and Tokyo and belongs in the collections of the Museo Reina Sofía, the Tate, the Centre Pompidou, the Stedelijk Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Moderna Museet, and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires. VICTOR VASARELY Paris 1960 Geometric Composition Ink on Rice Paper COA
By Victor Vasarely
Located in Miami, FL
Geometric composition in rice paper by Victor Vasarely (1906-1997). This is a fantastic geometric composition created in Paris France by the op-art artist Victor Vasarely. The piece of art has been realized in black ink on paper. Great piece of art with gorgeous provenance and professionally framed with UV glass. Victor Vasarely He is considered the father of the Op Art, artist and was born on April 9th, 1908 in Pécs, Hungary. Internationally recognized as one of the most important artists of the 20th century, his innovations in color and optical illusion have had a strong influence on many modern artists. Spanning most of his career, our collection of his prints and sculptures explores his forays into some of his most famous works such as the plastic alphabet and other iconic periods. In 1925, Vasarely was accepted into the University of Budapest’s School of Medicine where he attended for 2 years. Deciding that he wanted to take his life in a different direction, he enrolled in the Poldini-Volkman Academy of Painting in 1927. Though a medical education might have seemed superfluous compared to his new career in art, the time that Vasarely spent in medical school gave him a strong basis in scientific method and objectivity. This basis continued to manifest in his unique style of art. After the artist's first one-man show in 1930, at the Kovacs Akos Gallery in Budapest, Vasarely moved to Paris. For the next thirteen years, he devoted himself to graphic studies. His lifelong fascination with linear patterning led him to draw figurative and abstract patterned subjects, such as his series of harlequins, checkers, tigers, and of course the Vasarely zebras...
