From the 1950s to the 80s, Joe Eula cut quite a figure on the New York scene as a graphic, costume, fashion, stage-set, and film-set designer, as well as a stylist, party giver, and, briefly, a model agency macher. In addition, he was an artist. You could say that Eula was the art director extempore of Manhattan. And if you’ve never heard of Eula (or hadn’t before David Pittu played him in the recent Netflix Halston series), it’s because he was famous as an eminence grise, to employ a contradiction in terms. That’s why Andy Warhol called him, in typical Warholian hyperbole, “the most important man in New York.”
Eula came from a hardscrabble background in South Norwalk, Connecticut. After serving in World War II, he took classes on the GI Bill at the Art Students League, and formed a partnership with photographer Milton Greene to produce features for Life and Look magazines, and a couple of films, with Greene behind the camera, and Eula painting backdrops and styling. On his own, Eula illustrated Eugenia Sheppard’s famous newspaper fashion column, did illustration work for Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, designed ballet costumes and sets for Jerome Robbins, an album cover for Miles Davis, and a benefit invitation for Cesar...

The encroaching sea eventually got so close that the lighthouse had to go. Rather than simply let it fall into the sea, in July 2020 the entire building began to be carefully dismantled so as not to have any impact on the surrounding sensitive environment. The Orford Ness Lighthouse Trust plan at that time was to remove the lantern room as well as other original features and artefacts with a view to one day creating a lighthouse memorial of some sort on the other side of the Ness, facing Orford town’s quay.

ORFORD NESS
Orford Ness is an internationally important site for nature conservation and a designated National Nature Reserve. It is a rare and delicate landscape, consisting of shingle ridges and valleys, deposited over centuries by the sea. 20% of Europe's vegetated shingle is found on Orford Ness.
Once a former World War One and World War Two Airfield, the land is now a rich grazing marsh, providing home to birds, deer and rare-breed sheep. It is one of the few sites in the UK with purpose-built facilities for the testing of components of nuclear weapons. Comprising of six 'labs', which now form impressive backdrops on the shingle and the Black Beacon erected in 1928 to house an experimental rotating-loop navigation beacon.
GLYNN THOMAS
Glynn Thomas was born in Cambridge 1946. He studied at the Cambridge School of Art 1962-67, specialising in illustration and printmaking; taught printmaking at the Ipswich School of Art 1967-79, and is now a full-time artist living in Suffolk.
He has illustrated a number of books. Ernst Fuchs was born on February 13, 1930 in Vienna Ottakring as the only child of Maximilian and Leopoldine Fuchs; his father was of Jewish descent, which is why his grandfather and father emigrated to the USA and Shanghai in 1938 after the annexation of Austria by the Third Reich. To protect little Ernst from anti-Semitic hostility, it was decided to baptize him according to the Roman Catholic rite in 1942. The 12-year-old Ernst Fuchs was allowed to choose his own baptismal name and chose Ernst Peter Paul, in honor of the painter Peter Paul Rubens, whom he admired at the time. Around the same time, his godmother's brother, the painter and restorer Alois Schiemann, taught him the basics of drawing and painting. Until the age of 15, he attended the St. Anna painting school in Vienna, where he was taught sculpture and painting by Emmy Steinböck and Fritz Fröhlich.
After the war, Ernst Fuchs was finally able to take up his longed-for studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, which he had previously been denied for racist reasons. His teachers were first Robin Andersen, then Albert Paris Gütersloh. While still a student, he was allowed to hold his first solo exhibition in Paris in 1949, and soon afterwards, in 1950, he also moved to the French capital. Ernst Fuchst traveled through Europe and the USA for six years before taking an extended stay at the Dormition Monastery on Mount Zion in Israel in 1957 to study icon painting in depth. He finally returned to Vienna in 1962, where he founded the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism with former fellow students, of which he himself was to become the most important representative. The early years in particular were characterized by a strong surrealism; mythical and religious symbols in particular appealed to Ernst Fuchs and permeated his work. Later, Fuchs turned increasingly to Mannerism.
Ernst Fuchs' artistic spectrum broadened over the years: he sang and recorded various albums, which, like the majority of his paintings, were inspired by mystical motifs, and he designed stage sets for such famous operas as Wagner's Parsifal and Lohengrin or Mozart's Die Zauberflöte.
