About the Item

Joppa is a contemporary folk artist whose creative work includes the use of piano components and finishes learned from the restoration of pianos, his "day job". Joppa has shown his work joyfully and has been received by a growing group of collectors and benefactors. Starting slowly, with those for whom he restored an instrument, and gaining exposure at local galleries. The work is subdued and nuanced, such as the use of piano strings that can no longer serve their intended purpose, and forming kinetic sculptures. Or hand-lacquering piano lids that were removed from pianos whose life was long and lovely, but coming to an end. The work references the past, with a hand-pieced collage made from 1369 cut rectangles of sandpaper set into a black lacquered frame. The sandpaper pieces are adhered with a natural and traditional adhesive used in fine woodworking and piano restoration. The result is a truly Modern piece of art created by a self-taught Folk Artist that would be an intriguing focal point of any collection.

Framed Riga Gound from Nigeria With Tribal Motifs
Located in Jimbaran, Bali
A framed Riga Gound from Nigeria. Elite Nigerian men wore grand, flowing garments known by various names: riga (Hausa), agbádá (Yorùbá), boubou (French), and mbubb (Wolof). This particular strip-woven riga features a off-white, very light grey tone with silk accents adding contrast. Skilled embroiderers—often trained in Arabic calligraphy—incorporated motifs once imbued with protective Islamic symbolism. Central to the textile is a leaf (gambiya) motif, linked to the Nupe people. A spiral design symbolizes the wearer’s spiritual journey toward God. The hem is lined with magenta silk, imported via trans-Saharan trade routes. Historically admired across cultures, the riga remains a cornerstone of pan-Nigerian male national dress today. This framed Riga Gound has a unique back story. Having owned a prominent antiques shop in Hong-Kong for more than two decades it was common for antique dealers to sometimes come to the shop and present items to sell...
