This recent artwork from the w o o d p o p studio is an example of the type of modern marquetry that w o o d p o p is becoming synonymous with. Since its inception 10 years ago - the studio has specialised in marquetry and inlay work; meticulous art-forms where pieces of wood veneer are inlaid to create decorative designs or pictures. Emma Wood, who founded the studio 10 years ago in Wales' Black Mountains has gained a reputation for pairing this traditional art-form with contemporary subject matter and its application on to non-traditional surfaces.
Inspired by the Fibonacci spiral and the geometric patterns that shape the natural world, this "Modular I" artwork explores the harmony between mathematical order and organic form. The spiral motif echoes throughout existence — from shells, seed pods, and flowers to architecture, anatomy, and the cosmos itself. Like many of Emma's artworks - this piece is an exploration of the relationship between art and mathematics where number becomes form, and form becomes life.
This piece is made up of a combination of natural and dyed veneers including American Walnut, Birdseye Maple, Dyed Figured Anegre amongst others. It measures 600mm x 600mm and is mounted on 15mm board with solid walnut edges. It is sold unframed but please get in touch for a quote if you'd like us to mount it in a floating frame as per one of the images.

Emma Wood founded the w o o d p o p studio in Wales' Black Mountains which specialises in marquetry and inlay work. Since it's inception 10 years ago, the studio has gained a reputation for pairing the classic art-form of marquetry with contemporary subject matter and its application on to non-traditional surfaces. The studio prides itself on constantly challenging the limits of where and how marquetry can be applied and to that end they are the first designers to have ever successfully applied a full-scale marquetry artwork to fully-functioning wooden surfboards. In addition to this latest series of surfboards, w o o d p o p also creates bespoke wall art, custom furniture and site specific commissions.
