The Rosewood Cabinet (2020) by design duo Schimmel
Schweikle is a sculptural piece of functional art. Created using wood, wood filament, aluminium, resin, and industrial hardware, the cabinet blends traditional techniques with contemporary 3D fabrication. The intricate surfaces feature a hand-drawn two-dimensional wood grain that has been digitally translated into a three-dimensional relief, complete with ornamental flourishes that appear hand-carved. This illusion is heightened by a wood-stained finish, partially sanded to expose the material texture beneath. The cabinet’s modular aluminium frame contrasts with the baroque expressiveness of the façade, offering a playful tension between machine precision and organic form.
Janne Schimmel (Netherlands) and Moreno Schweikle (Germany) met while studying at the Design Academy Eindhoven, and their practice is rooted in material theory and cultural critique. In A Tree Full of Splinters, their 2020 solo exhibition at Everyday Gallery in Antwerp, the duo explored how wood - both as a material and symbol - has shaped design ideologies throughout history. Their work interrogates the boundary between craft and simulation, highlighting how digital tools can both replicate and transcend traditional methods. In this cabinet the designers question authenticity and the value of the handmade by rendering nature so faithfully through algorithmic processes that the distinction between real and simulated becomes nearly imperceptible.
