Size/Dimensions - Large - 10 3/4" Diameter x 1 1/4" Deep. Salvador Sanz Faus was an innovative and self-taught artist who worked with various techniques, including drawing, painting, mosaic, and ceramics. He was one of the founders of the Grupo Z and had connections with the artistic vanguard of postwar Valencia, particularly the Grupo Parpalló. Faus was known for his satirical and critical approach to art and society, which led him to create his own aesthetic doctrine called "Arte Facho." This concept focused on showcasing the "ugly, jocose, and ridiculous" aspects of things. Faus's ceramics gained international recognition, attracting the attention of Pablo Picasso during the 1957 Cannes exhibition, where his works were displayed alongside Picasso's. His ceramics often featured original forms, motifs, and techniques, with a unique enigma and strangeness. Faus was inspired by the Valencian "socarrat" medieval ceramics and incorporated primitive and abstract figurative elements into his works. He maintained ceramic workshops in Almàssera and Manises from 1955 to 1969. His notable works include murals for various locations, such as the Hotel Meliá in Madrid and the Hotel Sicania in Cullera, as well as mosaics for the panteon of the Villarrasa family in Valencia and the altar of the church in Grao de Gandía. Faus also created a collection of 1492 ceramics with pre-Columbian themes, which he offered to the Generalitat Valenciana for the Quinto Centenario celebrations. Faus passed away in 1997, leaving behind a legacy of innovative and nonconformist art that influenced the artistic scene in Valencia during the second half of the 20th century.
