Titled "Andy Warhol in his "Factory" at Union Square. New York City, USA. 1981", this Magnum print is from a time-limited edition that was only available to purchase for a period of five days.
This superb photograph is signed to the back on an affixed archival label, which carries the image’s accompanying text and comes in its original Magnum paper sleeve.

The accompanying text by the artist reads:
“Encouraged by youth photo-awards from ‘Photokina,’ influenced by Otto Steinert's ‘Subjective Photography,’ impressed by a visit to an Edward Steichen exhibition, to which Fritz Gruber took me on a first trip to New York, inspired by first publications in Twen, which had just been founded by Willy Fleckhaus, I began to doubt more and more the meaning of my studies in art history. In museums and on trips to Italy, I realized that I was more interested in the people standing before the art, than the masterpieces they were looking at. When the Münchner Illustrierte offered me a photographer contract in 1960, I finally had my job.”
Print: 6 × 6"; 15.2 × 15.2cm / Unframed
About the Artist:
Photographer and documentary filmmaker Thomas Hoepker helped define photojournalism in the 20th century. He was Magnum Photos’s first German member, eventually serving as the organization’s president from 2003-2006. Starting in 1959, Hoepker earned recognition as a photo reporter for German magazines, when he became a full-time reporter for Stern in 1964 and, later, the magazine’s art director. Hoepker frequently traveled on assignment to the United States, where he produced the photo series “Champ” —featuring legendary boxer Muhammad Ali —for Kristall magazine in 1966. His photographs of the September 11th attacks in New York have been seen around the world, and have sparked controversy. He is the recipient of the prestigious Kulturpreis of the Deutsche Gesellschaft fu¨r Photographie and a prize from the German Ministry of Foreign Aid for Death in a Cornfield (1988), his televised film about Guatemala.
