About the Item
Andrea Sullivan graduated from the National Art School with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2000. She has lived in Fontainebleau, London, Toronto, and New York before recently settling on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.
Her energetic and vibrant works serve as assembled testaments to her travels and to the time-laboured intensity and beauty of the many experiences that have shaped her practice.
During the year she lived in Fontainebleau, Sullivan took daily walks through the ever-changing forest, an experience that led her to work in watercolour on fragile, translucent handmade papers. As the pigment enters the paper, it moves and shifts unpredictably, at times causing the sheets to partially dissolve. Each work from this period is composed of more than one hundred individual pieces of paper.
In contrast, her time in New York saw her develop a series of small oil paintings on clay boards, characterised by asymmetrical, hard-edged forms. The city’s pace, energy and intricate mapping left a profound mark on her work.
Over the past eight years in Sydney, Sullivan’s practice has evolved into an increasingly labour-intensive and time-focused process. Drawing, cutting and individually painting thousands of shapes has allowed her to slow down and become deeply present. This meticulous method mirrors the rhythm of breath; each painted shape holds its own character and represents a single moment in time, while collectively they measure duration. Through repetition and the unfolding of process, the works find their structure, cadence, and voice.
