Woman in a Doorway is a contemporary artwork created in 2023 by Spanish artist Manuel Cruz. The piece belongs to the artist’s Ralph Lauren collection, a body of work in which Cruz intervenes directly on reproductions of canonical paintings found in art history books. For this work, the artist uses a paper reproduction of Rembrandt’s Woman in a Doorway, applying acrylic paint to reinterpret the image through Ralph Lauren motifs. By dressing historical figures in contemporary fashion references, Cruz creates a deliberate temporal displacement that connects classical art with present-day visual culture. This intervention transforms the original image into a new composition charged with cultural symbolism.
