About the Item
Antique Russian Orthodox Icon of Theotokos of Tikhvin , Holly Mother of Tihvin / Тихвинская икона Божией Матери in Russian - the copy of one of the most celebrated Orthodox Christian icons which is said to be one of the icons painted by St. Luke the Evangelist. According to tradition, in the 5th century, the icon was transferred from Jerusalem to Constantinople, where a church was built specially for it.
This icon comes with original period removable Gilt 84 Silver Riza and Wooden (likely Oak) Kiot 21 cm x 18.7 cm x 7 cm deep with original glass.
Icon is 11 cm x 9 cm x 1. 7 cm deep. Image is hand - painted with tempera on wood with gilt background, it demonstrates traditional abbreviations and inscriptions in archaic Russian. Back side covered with period textile cloth.
Riza with attached protruding ray halos has a set of Russian hallmarks : City of S. Petersburg , year 1861, assayer is Митин Александр Николаевич / Mitin Alexandr Nikolaevich , active 1842 -1877. Maker's initials Т.С.Б of Богданов Трофим Семенов / Bogdanov Trofim Semenov / who created numerous fine items in Gold and Silver between 1846 - 1875. He also specialized in creation of fine icons and made two icons for St. George's (Yuriev) Monastery in Novgorod that is usually cited as Russia's oldest monastery. ( for reference : read " L'Orfevreirie et la Bijouterie au XV - XX ss. " M.M Postnikova - Losseva, N.G Platonova, B.L Ulianova, 1983, page 185)
Overall fine condition with minor wear and loss of colors on icon. Natural tarnish on Riza that can be professionally cleaned on demand for additional payment. Scratches and dents on Kiot.
