About the Item

A rare and striking mid-century wall art piece by Canadian ceramic artist Maurice Chalvignac, dating from the 1960s. This work features a hand-sculpted pottery relief of a wine bottle labeled “Vin” (French for wine), accompanied by two colorful drinking glasses. The ceramic relief is mounted on a warm velvet backing and beautifully framed in solid teak, creating a rich textural contrast. On the reverse, the piece bears the characteristic red signed number—a hallmark of Chalvignac’s work during this era. Chalvignac, originally from France, immigrated to Montreal in the 1950s, where he became known for his bold ceramic designs. While most of his career was devoted to sculptural vases and vessels with textured glazes, he briefly experimented with wall-mounted pottery compositions in the 1960s. These wall art pieces are considered particularly unique and collectible, as they were produced in very limited numbers. This example is in good vintage condition, with no chips or cracks. The colors remain vibrant, and the teak frame retains its warm finish. A highly decorative and unusual piece of Canadian mid-century modern art pottery, perfect for collectors of Chalvignac or lovers of statement wall art. All of our orders are carefully packed and shipped within 24–48 hours, and we invite you to check our listings for more rare and collectible pieces.
