About the Item

Decorate a wall or display shelf with this colorful 19th-century glazed terracotta plate. Sculpted in Beaune, France circa 1860, this oval relief features two classical female figures, possibly muses or goddesses, seated in conversation within a stylized, textured landscape. The high-relief modeling is accentuated by a rich, hand-painted glaze in shades of green, blue, and brown, creating a striking trompe-l’œil effect. The reverse bears the incised signature “Gambut Aîné à Beaune,” identifying the workshop of Jean-Baptiste Gambut l’Aîné, a renowned potter active in Beaune from the 1830s through the late 19th century. The Gambut family were celebrated potiers d’art whose richly glazed terracotta works followed in the decorative tradition of Bernard Palissy. Examples of their rare creations are preserved today in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Beaune. This decorative wall platter remains in excellent condition with vivid coloration and subtle age-appropriate wear. A hanging hook is affixed to the back for easy installation. Measures: 14.5" W x 16.5" H.
