About the Item

An antique Japanese jingasa (foot soldier's hat). Jingasa (battle hats) were typically worn by common foot soldiers (ashigaru) during feudal Japan, serving as a lightweight alternative to a full helmet when heavy protection was not necessary. They were also sometimes worn during travel, especially during the Edo.Period (1603-1868). The hat is made of lacquered wood and is decorated with a gold crest (mon), vines, and leaves. The specific design elements on such hats often indicated the wearer's rank, affiliation, or feudal lord (daimyo). The hat is displayed on a decorative cashew lacquer panel with a handpainted gold border. The panel was made by Gracie (established in 1898) in their New York art studio in about 2010. There is hanging hardware on the back. The hat itself measures 17.25" In diameter
