Antique 18th Century English Silk Needlework Embroidery with Cornucopia

About the Item

A fine antique English embroidery. On a pale silk backing using silk thread. Signed "Mary Redford 1789" in ink along the bottom edge. In a gilded wooden oval frame with a glass insert and hanging wire. The cornucopia is positioned upright and is filled with flowers, including a white and red roses, a blue morning glory, pale sweet peas, red and white honeysuckles, and others. The piece is almost exclusively worked using variations on the satin stitch, creating a flat piece which conveys form through the direction and sheen of the silk threads. A tag on the back reads: "George Hughes, Fine Arts Dealer, Bewick House, 50 52, Pilgrim Street, NewCastle - On - Tyne, 1. " George Hughes was a gilder, framer, and art dealer working in Newcastle - On - Tyne in the late 19th and early 20th century. Simply a wonderful piece of 18th Century English needlework! Date: Late 18th Century Signed: Mary Redford 1789 Overall Condition: It is in overall good, as-pictured, used estate condition. Condition details: There is some toning, discoloration, and minor fading to the silk backing. There is a small tear to the very top edge of the backing, likely from when it was installed in the frame. There are losses to the gilding and some slight warping to the frame. Otherwise, there are some fine light surface scratches and other signs of expected light wear consistent with age. Measurements: Height: ca. 14 in. Width: ca. 12 1/2 in. Depth: ca. 1 in.
