About the Item
Ca. late 19th century framed German miniature hand - painted tempera painting of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe ( 28 August 1749 – 22 March 1832 ). Initials of artist present.
Last owner said it came to Sweden in 1944 with a migrated German/ Swedish family from Königsberg, German Prussia ( now city of Kaliningrad, Russia).
Period gilt frame with original glass insert, measures : 12 cm x 9.5 cm wide. Unframed measures 10.5 cm x 8 cm.Back side of the image is glued with moisture - protecting cover.
Fine condition for age, with minor scratches and chips on glass part.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe - a German polymath who is widely regarded as the most influential writer in the German language. His work has had a wide-ranging influence on literary, political, and philosophical thought in the Western world from the late 18th century to the present. A poet, playwright, novelist, scientist, statesman, theater-director, and critic. Goethe wrote a wide range of works, including plays, poetry and aesthetic criticism, as well as treatises on botany, anatomy, and color.
