In Japanese architecture, the latticework (koshi) is a design that has developed over a long history for its practicality. Its structure, which gently blocks views from the outside while letting in light and breezes and providing comfortable shade and ventilation within the room, is a true example of wisdom adapted to Japan's humid climate. This item is part of a lattice door made between the Taisho period and the early Showa period (early 20th century), and is thought to have once been used as a ventilation door panel in a storehouse or private home. The material used is cedar, a wood commonly used in Japanese furniture and building fixtures. Cedar is lightweight and easy to handle, characterized by its straight grain and warm color, which fades to a soft amber color over time. The appearance of this item is a perfect example of this, with the understated grain accentuating the rhythm of the latticework, creating a beautiful structure with beautiful shadows. The grid-like design, with its regularly-spaced vertical and horizontal timbers, is not only functional as an antique fixture, but also exudes a powerful aesthetic reminiscent of minimalist art in modern times.
