Large, unique and meaningful classical Greek work of art. If you love meaningful and handcrafted antiques referring to the classics then this striking and unique work of art from the Jugendstil era could be perfect for you. The large print inside this completely original antique is of an historic photo of a stunning relief sculpture by the prolific British sculptor Harry Bates (1850-1899). To the collectors the great poet, author and musician Homer (circa 700 BC) needs no introduction. What we love about the composition in this picture, is how the two semi-nude, female listeners (possibly muzes) are ecstasized by the beauty of what they are hearing. There is a spiritual quality to the intensity with which Homer is one with his lyre and what he is creating clearly resonates with the souls of his muzes. With his relief sculpture, Harry Bates not only amazes us with the quality and detail of his creation, he also lets us witness an incredibly intimate moment of another artist (Homer) and how he too touches the souls of others with his creation. If you are erudite by nature then you may have already noticed that there is a third dimension to this 'Gesamtkunstwerk'. The creator of this antique has -in a semi-stylised manner- also incorporated the four elements into the hand carved wooden frame. The theory of the four elements was introduced by another Greek, the philosopher Empedocles (490 BC) and we are certain you understand which hand carved images in the frame represent which element. Maybe ultimately this antique is telling us (without all the words I need) that our human spirit / our soul / our consciousness is the fifth element that is capable of both creating and enjoying what we have come to call art.
