Joy to All Who Sorrow Mother of God with coins of Saint Petersburg is a miracle working icon celebrated throughout Russia. On July 23 1888 during severe thunderstorm a lightning struck a chapel located closely to a glass factory in St.Petersburg setting fire to its interior walls, burning the icons, and utterly shattering the collection box, but not touching the Icon depicting the Mother of God, Joy of All who Sorrow that remained unharmed. The icon was knocked to the floor. The poor-box that was nearby broke open and somehow twelve copper coins (half-kopeck pieces) affixed themselves to various spots on the Icon with no apparent reason — as evidence of a miracle of God. Rumors of an unusual incident spread around the district, quickly attracting pilgrims to the chapel. Miraculous healings began. Two of them were officially documented and confirmed. Eventually, a new iconography type of the “Joy of All Who Sorrow” image appeared where the coins began to be depicted. Along both sides of the icon framing the Mother of God there are angels that minister the cold and naked, the elderly and crippled, those who are traveling, and the sick and the hungry. The Icon depicts the mother of God at full-length dressed in a red-blue robe with a white veil covering Her head.In the clouds above her the Savior sits enthroned holding the Holy Gospels in His left hand and blessing with His right. After that remarkable accident in honor of the miraculous icon a church was built on the site of the burnt chapel. The charred former chapel remained inside the large stone Russian style chapel, "encasing" it. The new chapel, accommodating up to 800 people, was considered the largest in Russia at that time. Last image : Chapel of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God. St-Petersburg, 1898. Most of the items that we sell at Atelier De Montplaisir are not new at all if not stated otherwise.
