Antique wall-hanging vase made from Japanese bamboo/River fishing equipment

About the Item

This is a traditional Japanese fishing implement called an "uke," crafted from bamboo during the Meiji to early Showa period. It was placed in rivers to trap eels and loaches, which, once entered, could not escape. Such tools served as vital instruments for people who relied on fishing for their livelihood. Made by bundling and weaving thin bamboo rods, it strikes a balance between flexibility and strength. While similar tools are still produced today, their forms differ. Now that this particular piece has fulfilled its original role, we are left to admire its elegant and sculptural beauty. One of its most distinctive features is its color. Originally a light bamboo tone, it has darkened over time after being stored unused in an attic, where it absorbed smoke from hearth fires and oil lamps. This process—unintended and organic—imbues the piece with a rich blend of black and deep brown hues. It is a beauty born not of design but of time and environment, giving it a quiet, meditative presence. A particularly unique design element is the way the bundled bamboo is shaped into a cone and wrapped spirally with rope and bamboo strips. This spiral wrapping is not commonly seen in other uke traps, making this piece especially interesting and artistically distinctive. The outer surface is stable and does not transfer soot when touched. However, the interior may still carry some residual soot. This has been intentionally left as-is to preserve the atmosphere and historical traces of the era in which it was used. Simply hanging it on a wall transforms it into a striking sculptural object. Insert dried flowers or branches into the open top, and it becomes a charming and rustic flower vessel. Whether placed in a traditional Japanese setting or a modern interior, it harmonizes beautifully and adds quiet character to any space.
