About the Item

An Arts Crafts Minton tile in the Kingfisher pattern, designed by Christopher Dresser, ca. 1870. Arts Crafts designer Christopher Dresser’s works were true to the movement’s celebration of nature as a source of artistic inspiration and the aesthetic home as a sanctuary from modern life. Dresser’s educational training in botany is evident in these tiles, which depicts a pair of fish reflected across a flat and almost scientific rendering of floral motifs. The pattern, called “Kingfisher,” is shown in an original Mintons catalog from the London showroom where customers would select tiles to decorate their homes. Tiles such as these were placed around fireplaces. The back of the tile is impressed with “Mintons China Works Stoke on Trent” as well as the Minton globe mark “Stoke Upon Trent Walbrook, London.” There is an illegible printed registration mark. Condition: Good. Hairline crack running in bottom left quadrant, approximately 10 cm in length. A few small chips to edges. Dimensions: 7 7/8 in. W x 7 7/8 in. H x 3/8 in.
