How much can weeds be said to be harmful and useless, when their presence can play an important role in achieving balance in the plant world. It can provide shade and reinforce the tolerance of cultivated plants, but it can also destroy those around it: it can deprive them of food and reduce the fodder value of pastures and meadows. The perception of weeds can also vary from country to country, for example, in Canada, the Canadian goldenrod is a valuable garden and cut flower, which has become a widespread weed in our country in a short few years, but there are also parasitic weeds such as Aranka, which is one of the most damaging weeds. The collage as a technique is linked to the expression of the symbol. The papers I worked with were mostly photos of my great-grandmother’s Women’s Magazine from the 1960s, cut up and found in a large wooden box in the attic. The pictures show motifs such as fire, hands, feet, wreath, sun, moon, nuance the symbolism of the weed and place them in a story. Specific weeds appear in the material of the exhibition: dandelion, in the collage Deep Roots, river dandelion, whose coiling forms a wreath in the centre of the picture, the parasitic plant Aranka, which, appearing harmonious on the surface, coils itself onto the host plant while its roots are poisoned." ARTIST STATEMENT Stella Koleszár graduated in 2016 from the Department of Drawing and Art History in Szeged with a degree in visual representation, then in 2019 from the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design as a glass design artist. The main media of her creative practice are glass and paper-based works, whose starting point is the instinctiveness of drawing. In her glass pieces, she explores themes such as allegorical interpretations of sin and the Fall, as well as symbolic phenomena related to myths and fairy tales, which range from the personal to the universal. In her collages, she is interested in the happenings of the plant world and in questions concerning the human-centred perception of weeds. In 2020, she was an artist-in-residence in Salzburg, supported by the Budapest Gallery. In 2023, she received the Elle Deco EDIDA Young Talent of the Year award. In 2024, she represented Hungary as a glass artist at the international glass art symposium in Jablonec nad Nisou, Czech Republic, organized under the auspices of UNESCO. Alongside her individual artistic practice, she also participates in community projects in the field of street art under the name Muralinas.
